Few hospitals in Boston were built around women physicians the way this one was. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, shown here on Dimock Street, was founded in 1862 by Dr. Marie Zakrzewska and staffed largely by women, with a training school for nurses and doctors. This view of its maternity building is a glass dry plate negative made between 1900 and 1010 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities and institutions and sold the views widely. It records a working hospital at the turn of the century, when childbirth care was moving from the home into hospital wards.
