Tremont Street runs along the edge of Boston Common, and this view captures the tree-lined mall that ran beside the park, where pedestrians could stroll out of the city's commercial bustle and into open ground. The Common, dating to 1634, is generally regarded as the oldest public park in the United States, and by the early 1900s its borders were lined with shops, offices, and streetcar traffic. The picture was made as a glass dry-plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns and streets around the turn of the twentieth century.
