Tremont Street, one of Boston's oldest thoroughfares, is the subject here, and the record also points to the nearby parks. The street runs along the edge of Boston Common, the city's oldest public park, so views along it often combine substantial buildings with open green space. This 8-by-10-inch glass negative dates from roughly 1890 to 1910, when streetcars, carriages and pedestrians shared these blocks. The Detroit Publishing Company made it as part of a large catalog of American views, and its prints now document how ordinary city streets looked before automobiles took over.
