Perched on Beacon Hill above Boston Common, the Massachusetts State House is the subject of this negative, and its brick façade and gilded dome have long made it one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Charles Bulfinch designed the building, which was completed in 1798 and has been the seat of the state legislature ever since. The view was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate between 1900 and 1910, probably by a Detroit Publishing Company photographer, a firm that documented American cities and landscapes for commercial sale. The negative's route through a Colorado historical society before it reached the Library of Congress shows how such views moved between collections over the decades.
