Few rooms in Boston hold more of the commonwealth's political history than the chambers inside the State House on Beacon Hill, and this view shows one of them as it looked around 1895. Charles Bulfinch designed the building, which was completed in 1798, so by the time N.L. Stebbins made this photograph its legislative rooms had already served generations of lawmakers. The print was registered for copyright, a record noted on its face. Visitors interested in the period will find the furnishings and architecture useful for seeing how public interiors were decorated in the late nineteenth century.
