State Street, which runs down toward the harbor from the Old State House, is the subject of this view, with the 1713 landmark standing at the heart of the street's commercial life. By the early 1900s State Street was the center of Boston's banking and insurance trade, and the old building, once the seat of colonial and state government, was surrounded by offices. The card was issued by the H.C. White Co. of North Bennington, Vermont, a firm known for stereoviews of American cities and landmarks. Seen through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical images fuse into a single three-dimensional view of the street.
