This print reproduces a mural in the Massachusetts State House in Boston that shows Paul Revere setting out on his night ride. Revere's midnight warning in April 1775, that British troops were marching toward Lexington and Concord, became widely known through Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1861 poem, and by the early 1900s it was a familiar part of Boston's civic memory. The mural was painted by Robert Reid, an American artist known for decorative work in public buildings, and the State House's interior decoration of that era reflected a wider effort to tie public architecture to national origin stories. The record notes that the print was later shown in an exhibition on Revere's ride and Longfellow's legend.
