The Old South Meeting House, built in 1729, shares this view with the Old South Building, a commercial block that rose beside the historic church as downtown Boston grew around it. The meeting house is best known for the town meetings held there in 1773, when crowds gathered before the Boston Tea Party. By the time this glass negative was made, around 1905 by its estimated date, the old church stood surrounded by busy commercial streets. Its survival was a point of local pride, since it was rescued from demolition in the 1870s and later opened as a museum.
