The meetinghouse at the corner of Washington and Milk Streets is the subject here, a brick building that dates to 1729 and still stands in the heart of downtown Boston. In December 1773, thousands gathered inside to protest the tea tax, and the meeting that followed helped set off the Boston Tea Party. Later, during the British occupation, the building was used as a riding school and stable. By the early 1900s the old church sat amid the shops and traffic of Washington Street, a contrast that this stereograph, made by the H.C. White Co. of North Bennington, Vermont, around 1906, captures. Such cards were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect.
