The engraving shows the east elevation of the Hollis Street meeting house in Boston while the new building was going up on the site of an earlier church that fire had recently destroyed. Charles Bulfinch, who later designed the Massachusetts State House, drew the view, and an engraver named Vallance transferred it to copper. It appeared in the April 1788 issue of *The Columbian Magazine* of Philadelphia, one of the monthly miscellanies that carried architectural views and news of American cities in the years after the Revolution. The piece is a useful record of Boston's postwar rebuilding and of Bulfinch's early work as a designer.
