The Old Brick Meeting House, a Congregational church that stood in Boston's downtown district, is shown here as it looked in 1808, when this view was drawn by I.R. Smith. J. Kidder then engraved the plate in aquatint, a technique that builds up tone with fine grains of resin rather than hard lines. That soft, wash-like finish suited early American architectural views, which often aimed to show a building as a respected civic landmark. The print was issued some years later, between 1810 and 1840, and it offers a useful record of a Boston church during the city's early nineteenth-century growth.
