The print shows the New Custom House in Boston, a Greek Revival granite building on State Street, as its design was presented in 1840. Charles H. Billings drew the view and G. G. Smith engraved it in etching. The customhouse was a federal project of the period, when collecting duties on imported goods was a major source of government revenue, and the building's monumental columns and stone facade signaled that authority. The print was later kept in an album of materials gathered by Benjamin Brown French, a Washington official and collector.
