This 8 by 10 inch glass negative records the Suffolk County Courthouse in Boston, a granite Romanesque Revival building that H. H. Richardson designed for Pemberton Square. Its heavy stonework and arched openings stood out among the downtown buildings of the period. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made views of American cities and landscapes for sale to travelers and for illustrated publications, made the picture around 1906. Its glass plate format gives the image fine detail in the masonry and street scene, which is useful for viewers interested in how the civic architecture of turn-of-the-century Boston looked.
