This view of the Crawford House puts a Boston hotel and its street at the center of the frame, rather than a monument or landmark. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made between 1900 and 1920 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large catalog of American city and landscape views. Hotels and street scenes like this one document the busy commercial life of the period, when horse-drawn traffic was giving way to trolleys and early automobiles. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
