Bathers crowd the shoreline at City Point, the rocky peninsula at the southern edge of South Boston, in this view made around 1906. City Point's public beaches drew large summer crowds from the crowded tenements of the city, and by the early 1900s the area was a popular place for families to swim and spend a day by the water. The picture is a glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of American towns, resorts and landscapes, and it shows how Boston's working-class residents used the harbor for leisure.
