Tracks and elevated lines crowd the frame in this view of South Station, Boston. The station opened in 1899 as a shared terminal for several railroads on the city's south side, and the elevated line along Atlantic Avenue ran close by, so the scene captures a busy meeting point of steam travel and city transit. The image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, dated around 1905, from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American cities and railroads in the early twentieth century.
