The subject is the Boston and Maine Railroad station in Malden, Massachusetts, recorded on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made around 1906. By then the Boston and Maine was one of New England's major carriers, and its suburban lines carried commuters from towns like Malden into Boston every day, which made stations such as this one busy centers of local life. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this view, produced a large catalog of American scenes in the early 1900s, and its station views offer a record of how such buildings looked in that era. The large plate format gave the photographer room to capture considerable detail across the scene.
