Few regimental camp scenes from the war were drawn and printed as lithographs for home audiences, and this one shows the 37th Massachusetts Volunteers at their camp near Brandy Station, Virginia, in 1864. Brandy Station was a rail junction in Culpeper County where the Army of the Potomac spent long stretches in winter quarters, and in 1863 it was the site of the largest cavalry battle fought on American soil. The print was issued by J.H. Bufford's lithography firm in Boston, a shop that produced many views of regiments and military life for the families and friends of soldiers. Such images let viewers at home picture the daily routine of tents, drill grounds, and camp life that letters rarely described in full.
