The Secession Bubble. It Must Burst" casts the Southern states' withdrawal from the Union as a soap bubble destined to pop, a conceit that suited the mood in 1862, more than a year after South Carolina and other states had seceded. The lithograph was published in Boston by J.H. Bufford, one of the city's busiest commercial lithographers, and printed in buff and black, a two-tone scheme that was economical for mass-produced political images. Prints like this one were meant to rally Northern readers, and the confident title reflects the hope, common in that year, that the Union would soon prevail.
