This cover commemorates the Battle of Shiloh, also called Pittsburg Landing, fought April 6 and 7, 1862, near the Tennessee River in southwestern Tennessee. Ulysses S. Grant's Union army was caught off guard by a Confederate assault led by Albert Sidney Johnston, who was killed on the first day, and the two-day battle produced some of the heaviest casualties of the war to that point. Boston lithographer J.H. Bufford made the artwork, and Oliver Ditson & Co. published the sheet music, part of a busy wartime trade in songs that let families follow the conflict at the piano.
