Plantation melodies" is the title printed on this Boston sheet music cover, a lithograph issued by George P. Reed around 1847 and made at J.H. Bufford's lithography shop. The subject headings list minstrel shows and boys, which points to the blackface minstrel stage that drew large audiences in the 1840s with songs presented as scenes of plantation life. Boston was a major center of music publishing and lithography then, and covers like this one were designed to catch the eye of buyers in parlors and music shops. The imagery draws on the racist stereotypes of minstrelsy, which are worth keeping in mind when looking at it today.
