Brother Jonathan, the nickname for the American people, leads a column of "Yankee volunteers" toward "Dixie," the name of the Southern states, in this color lithograph. The Capitol appears among the subjects, tying the scene to Washington, where the print was published by C.F. Morse. Copyright was deposited in January 1862, during the first year of the Civil War, when Northern regiments were pouring into the capital and the Union was still organizing its army. The lithograph was printed by J.H. Bufford in Boston and is one of the many political prints of the period that used cartoon figures to rally public support for the war.
