Carroll & Queen's "Double Clog Dance" is the subject of this color lithograph, which was designed to sell the sheet music it advertised. J. H. Bufford's Boston shop printed the cover around 1864 for the publisher Oliver Ditson & Co. Clog dancing was a staple of the minstrel stage, where white performers in blackface often imitated Black dancers, and the Library of Congress catalogs the print under portrayals of African Americans. It offers a record of popular entertainment in wartime Boston, and it rewards a critical look at the caricature it carries.
