Published in Boston around 1862, this lithograph carries the plain title "Our generals" and came from the shop of J.H. Bufford, a well-known Boston lithographer. It belongs to a wave of Civil War prints that offered portraits of Union commanders to a public eager to put faces to the names in the newspapers. Lithography made such multi-figure images affordable to reproduce, so prints like this one circulated widely in homes and shops during the war's early years. Its focus on the Union high command as a group makes it a useful record of how the public was first introduced to its leaders.
