South Station, shown here from Summer Street, was the Boston terminal of the Boston and Providence and the Old Colony railroads, and the building opened in 1899 as a combined depot for several lines. This glass-plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities and rail hubs for promotional use around the turn of the twentieth century. The view captures the street-side approach where horse-drawn carriages, streetcars, and pedestrians shared space with the growing flow of rail passengers. Its notes show it was later a gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado and entered the Library of Congress collection in 1949.
