Fort Independence sits on Castle Island at the mouth of Boston Harbor, and this c1906 view places it beside Pleasure Bay, the calm inlet on the South Boston shore where families gathered for summer outings. The subjects listed for the picture include children at play and sailboats on the water, which show the fort serving as a backdrop to ordinary seaside leisure rather than as a military site alone. The fort's granite walls date to the early 1800s, and the bay's sheltered water made it a popular spot for both recreation and boating. The picture is one of the Detroit Publishing Company's glass negatives, a body of work known for documenting American places in the early twentieth century.
