Carved into the porch are the words "R.R. Dept." and "Y.M.C.A.," marking this building as a railroad branch of the Young Men's Christian Association in Concord, New Hampshire. Railroad YMCAs of this era offered railway workers reading rooms, lodging, and recreation, often at hours that suited shift work. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates from about 1908 and came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded towns and businesses across the country for commercial sale. Concord, the state capital, was an important stop on the Boston and Maine line.
