The Copley Square Hotel stood on the edge of the plaza that gives it its name, in the Back Bay district of Boston. This glass negative, made around 1909 by the Detroit Publishing Company, records the building at the time when the firm was selling city views and postcards across the country. The square was then a showpiece of civic architecture, anchored by H. H. Richardson's Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library, so the hotel view places a working commercial building within one of the city's most prominent settings. The negative later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado, which gave it to the Library of Congress in 1949.
