This view looks across the grass of Boston Common toward the Massachusetts State House at right, with the Beacon Street buildings filling the center of the frame. The Common, set aside in 1634, is the oldest public park in the United States, and the State House, designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1798, has overlooked its northern edge ever since. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely around 1900 to 1910 documenting American cities and landmarks. It captures the district in the early years of the automobile, when Beacon Street was still lined with the same grand houses and hotels.
