Few schools in the country were as closely tied to the training of women teachers as the Boston Normal School, which shares this building with Girls' Latin School in this view of the city. The Normal School dated to the mid-nineteenth century and prepared young women for classroom work, while Girls' Latin offered a rigorous college-preparatory course. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large numbers of American city views in the early twentieth century, recorded the building on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative between 1900 and 1920, a format that gave the sharp detail that makes the facade's architecture easy to study.
