Few views of Boston's religious life show a children's classroom as plainly as this Sunday school room at the First Church of Christ, Scientist. The church was the mother church of the Christian Science movement founded by Mary Baker Eddy, and by the 1920s its Boston congregation was a large and influential one, with members who sent their children to weekly classes in rooms like this. Photographs of church interiors from this period often served congregations and publications that wanted to show their facilities, so the picture doubles as a record of how a well-equipped space for religious instruction looked in the early 1920s.
