The First Church of Christ, Scientist, known as the Mother Church, stands on Huntington Avenue in Boston's Back Bay and is the spiritual center of the Christian Science movement. The congregation, organized in 1879, built its first edifice in the 1890s and later added a much larger extension, so the interior shown here reflects a building that was expanded to hold the growing membership. This view, credited to the Boston photographers Tebbs and Knell and dated around 1923, shows the seating and furnishings as worshipers of the period would have known them. It is a useful record of the sanctuary before later changes to the complex.
