Few stations in Boston were as ambitious as the Southern Terminal, better known today as South Station. This interior of its main waiting room dates to about 1899, around the time the terminal opened to serve rail lines arriving from the south. The photograph was made by H.W. Weller of Boston, whose copyright credit appears on the caption card, and it shows a space built to hold large crowds moving between trains and the city. The open floor and the scale of the hall reflect how railroads of the period designed stations to handle heavy daily traffic.
