Ballou's Pictorial, a Boston illustrated weekly, ran this wood engraving of the Boston and Cambridge horse railroad in its June 7, 1856 issue, when horse-drawn streetcars were still a novelty in the region. Horsecars ran on iron rails laid into city streets and offered a smoother, more regular ride than the omnibuses they were replacing. The print shows the animals and the car that made the new service possible, and it stands as a record of how quickly urban transit was changing in the mid-1850s.
