Solita Solano is shown on horseback at the head of a suffrage parade on Beacon Street in Boston, a detail that places this picture in the middle of the fight for women's voting rights rather than in a studio or a stable. Solano (1888-1975) was a writer and journalist who later worked in Paris, and her long partnership with the writer Janet Flanner is documented in the papers this print belongs to. In 1915 the suffrage movement was building toward the state and national campaigns that would secure the vote for women in 1920, and a woman riding at the front of a procession was a deliberate challenge to the idea that public political display belonged to men.
