A horse-drawn float carrying the Division of Experiment Station of Tuskegee Institute appears in this 1905 parade held in honor of Theodore Roosevelt. Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, founded in Alabama in 1881 under Booker T. Washington, trained students in farming, trades and teaching, and its experiment station tested crops and farming methods aimed at helping Black farmers in the rural South. Floats like this one let the school show its practical work to visitors and officials. The horses and wagon suggest that the station's work was meant to be seen on the road as well as in the fields.
