Horseshoe Curve, a broad bend cut into the Allegheny Mountains near Altoona, Pennsylvania, is the subject here, with the Pennsylvania Railroad's track sweeping around the hillside. The line was built in the early 1850s so trains could climb the steep western face of the range at a workable grade, and the curve's wide arc became one of the best-known engineering works in the country. This view appeared in the *National Album*, a Philadelphia publication issued by W.P. Mange & Co. in 1874, which gathered views of scenery and industry for readers interested in the nation's growing rail network.
