Horse Shoe Cañon, on the Green River, is the subject here, a rock-walled gorge that the photographer Timothy H. O'Sullivan recorded during the Fortieth Parallel survey. Led by geologist Clarence King, the survey mapped the geology of the western territories along the 40th parallel, and its photographers documented terrain that few outsiders had seen. This albumen print is Plate 49 from the survey's published report, and its canyon walls show how the expedition's photographers used landscape to convey both the scale and the difficulty of the country.
