Flooded streets and a levee on the St. Louis riverfront give this glass negative its particular setting, with horse-drawn wagons hauling shoes through standing water. The Mississippi and its tributaries regularly swelled over their banks in the early twentieth century, and cities along the river depended on teams and wagons to move freight when mud and water made other routes impassable. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, so it was likely taken to document a current event. The title is catalogued from information the agency wrote on the negative or its caption card and has not been independently verified, so the exact location and circumstances should be read with that in mind.
