A blacksmith struggles to shoe one horse while a second animal crowds in and gets in his way, the scene caught in black crayon and graphite. The catalog dates the sheet to about 1834, and a date written on the drawing, 24 January 1834, may support that, though the record flags its data as preliminary. Shoeing in this period was done by hand at a forge, and a restless horse could make the work dangerous, so the drawing captures a common hazard of the trade. Its loose, wash-like handling gives it the quick feel of a study made from life.
