This view centers on the bronze equestrian statue of Union general Joseph Hooker, which stands on the grounds of the Massachusetts State House. Hooker, a Massachusetts native known as "Fighting Joe," commanded the Army of the Potomac in 1863, and the statue honors his service in the Civil War. The sculptor, Anne Whitney, was a Boston artist whose work was unusual for a woman of her era in receiving a major public commission. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American towns and monuments around 1900 to 1910.
