The view pairs the bronze equestrian statue of George Washington with a fountain crowned by a figure of Venus rising from the sea, two features that give the Public Garden its character. The garden, established in 1837 as one of the earliest public botanic gardens in the United States, was a favorite place for strolling Bostonians by 1905. This stereograph card, number 5251 in its series, was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, a popular parlor device that gave such outdoor scenes a sense of depth for home audiences of the period.
