Swan boats, the pedal-powered craft shaped like swans that glide across the lagoon in Boston's Public Garden, are the subject here. Robert Paget introduced them in 1877, and they remain one of the city's best-loved attractions. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely around 1900 recording American towns, parks and scenery. The garden itself dates to 1837 and was one of the first public gardens in the country, so the picture captures a place that drew crowds well before the photograph was made.
