The bronze equestrian statue of George Washington, by sculptor Thomas Ball, stands at the center of this view of the Boston Public Garden. Ball's statue was unveiled in 1869, and it became one of the city's best-known monuments, set among the garden's flower beds and winding paths. This c1906 glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns and landmarks for commercial sale. The picture captures a park that was already a favorite gathering place for residents and visitors at the turn of the century.
