The water in this view is the lagoon at the heart of the Boston Public Garden, which the catalog record calls a lake. The park opened in 1837 as one of the first public botanic gardens in the United States, and its winding paths and footbridges were built around that pond, where swan boats began carrying riders in 1877. The negative is a dry plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American cities and scenery in the years around 1900. It reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
