The bronze equestrian statue of George Washington stands at the center of the Boston Public Garden, a landscaped space that was laid out in the 1830s on land reclaimed from the Charles River tidal flats. Sculptor Thomas Ball's work was unveiled in 1869 and was among the earliest public monuments to Washington in the city, set on a granite pedestal amid flower beds and tree-lined paths. This glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1900 and 1910, records the garden as it looked during the early twentieth century, when it was a popular stop for both residents and visitors.
