The view centers on the Public Garden in Boston, where a bronze equestrian statue of George Washington stands near a fountain topped by Venus rising from the sea. Ball's Washington, unveiled in 1869, was among the first public statues of the first president in the city, and the garden itself, laid out in the 1830s, was one of the earliest public botanical gardens in the United States. This stereograph, issued by the New York firm Underwood & Underwood around 1905, shows how visitors of that period strolled among monuments, flower beds and water features. Stereo cards like this one were sold by the thousands, so the image also records the popular taste for scenic city views in the early 1900s.
