Few American cities had an underground railway when Boston opened its Tremont Street Subway in 1897, and this view records one of the entrances at the edge of the Public Garden, the park that had opened to the public in 1837. Around 1921, streetcars and subway passengers would have shared the crossings and walkways around the park, a busy meeting point of commuters and visitors. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns and scenic sites for commercial sale in the early twentieth century, made the picture, so it reflects the company's interest in documenting everyday city life alongside its better-known landscapes.
