Fishing schooners were a common sight at T Wharf, the long pier on Boston's waterfront that served the city's fleet of Atlantic fishing vessels for much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Schooners like the one pictured carried cod, haddock and mackerel from the Grand Banks and other offshore grounds, and their two-masted rigs were a familiar feature of the harbor. This view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photochrom and photographic prints captured American cities and working waterfronts around the turn of the 20th century. The image offers a useful record of how the port looked when sail was still central to Boston's fishing trade.
