Eight small scenes make up this wood engraving, each showing a different stage of work inside Chickering's Pianoforte Manufactory on Tremont Street in Boston. The firm was founded by Jonas Chickering, who began building pianos in Boston in the 1820s and grew into one of the best-known piano makers in the United States. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper printed the engraving in April 1859, when readers were still curious about the inner workings of large city workshops. Taken together, the views offer a close look at hand craftsmanship in a major nineteenth-century piano works.
